Upcoming meeting

The RD is having a membership meeting tomorrow at our usual place, the Masonic Temple on Sloat. What is different is that the HSS Executive Director, Abbie Yant,  who is our speaker is coming at the beginning of the meeting, rather than our usual time, after the business part of the meeting.

HSS Executive Director Abbie Yant will be joining us at the beginning of our RD Membership meeting.

FROM THE CHAIR (RUDI FALTUS)

Having worked a school calendar for all of my life, summer is still a special season for me and I imagine that is true for most of us. Although I do a lot of things that I used to do in the summer at different times of the year as a retiree, I still experience summer as a time to kick back, relax, explore new things and ideas, and spend time with friends and family who don’t necessarily live close by. As a native San Franciscan, exploring the city in its present form is fascinating as I reflect on the incredible changes that have occurred throughout my lifetime here and summer seems to be the time of year to do it.  Gatherings of people for conventions and conferences, concerts, reunions, festivals, all kinds of events, many of them free, and long days make summer special for all of us. So, whatever you do and I hope you do some things with UESF Retired, have a great summer!

Thanks to Lou Webb and Tim Tindol, many of us enjoyed a great walk at Heron’s Head Park on April 30. It was a great day with great company. Also thanks to Marian Gonzalez and Marge Fujikawa who organized a docent led tour of the incredibly moving exhibit, Then They Came For Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II, at the Presidio on April 25. Both events were well attended, and we all learned a great deal and enjoyed each other’s company. We can all organize activities for each other – ARC will help. Thanks again Lou, Tim, Marian and Marge!

Membership Meetings: Save these dates for later 2019 membership meetings: Mar. 21, May 23, Sept. 26, and Nov. 21.  All are at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple.

Update on City Retirees who Retired Before November 1996: After the San Francisco Employees Retirement System (SFERS) agreed to pay the Supplemental COLA of 1½% to city retirees who retired before November 1996, the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) sued the SFERS to stop it. Protect Our Benefits (POB) and many unions filed an amicus brief in support of the SFERS in an attempt to restore justice to this group of retirees. The case will now be heard in San Francisco Superior Court on May 1 at 1:30 on the fourth floor of 350 McAllister St. Retired Division members, especially those who are impacted and their family members, are encouraged to attend and testify. Check www.protectourbenefits.org or Protect Our Benefits Facebook page for more information.
